The following are a few of the many letters of support and thanks that we receive on a daily basis:
My husband received excellent care and was always treated with respect. They were also very compassionate with the both of us. Thank you so much.
The hospice team was excellent. They couldn’t have been any better. From the cleaning people to the doctor, every one of them was the best!
Quite often while sitting in the solitude and silence of the dying, we experience the cherished presence and loving gift they give to us….”in their dying, they show us how to live” Helen, volunteer
The training I received in all areas has been excellent and made me comfortable in almost any situation. In fact, I have to say the training surpassed the training I got in 40 years as an insurance adjuster and I was one of their trainers! Dutch, volunteer
I cannot say enough about the wonderful people that represented Hospice of Virginia during the most difficult time in my children’s and my life. To the people who are Hospice of Virginia, I say “you made a very difficult time bearable” and I thank you (although that doesn’t seem like enough). I am currently giving back to show my appreciation in the form of volunteering at Hospice of Virginia four hours each week. The people are what make Hospice of Virginia and the help they provide to individuals is priceless. Charles, Patient caregiver & volunteer
I am a hospice volunteer and very happy and proud to say that. When people ask me how I can be one, I answer them by saying the best and most wonderful thing that I have ever done was deciding to become a Hospice Volunteer. It gives me such a warm and wonderful feeling when a person who knows that they will not be with us very long says to me, “thank you for visiting me and bringing some joy into my life.”
When I visit my patients, any pain or sadness that I feel disappears because I am bringing some happiness and comfort to someone who needs it.
Volunteering for Hospice of Virginia has been one of the most rewarding activities I have ever done in my life. The tears, the hugs, and “thank yous” are all that this old retired guy could ask for. Dutch, volunteer Hospice of Virginia
From the time I started to volunteer for Hospice of Arizona several years ago, my life had changed forever. When I get thanked by relatives and friends that are visiting imminent dying patients, after I read to them a poem from a hospice pamphlet, I secretly say thanks to myself, for making my day more livable. People are not jobs to me. I get to do the face to face with people. I can sit with them and now that I have the time to spend with them. I have time to sit with their hand in mine. If you think about it, volunteers are the only people that don’t get paid to be with them. I’m the only one they’ve got that isn’t paid to be there with them when they don’t have family. In giving families the benefit of the doubt and with lack of judgment, the volunteer steps up and fills the void of the missing family member. Janis, volunteer
Our greatest gift is that we come with no agenda, just to sit and listen and help. In return you receive “gratefulness and the fact that they are so loving. The sickest love you with their eyes” Janis, volunteer
